City
Lancaster Notes
Quieter, older and made of stone. Nicole Junkermann keeps these Lancaster pages for the slower north, where the weather is part of the view.
Back to the journal
Some places ask you to slow down, and the north is one of them.
Lancaster is a city built to be walked. Cobbles, weathered stone and steep little lanes give way to wide views over rooftops and hills, and the light here has a softer, greyer quality that suits a long afternoon with nowhere particular to be.
These notes favour the everyday: a market morning, a churchyard full of old names, the moment a hill opens up at the end of a narrow street. There is a calm to a smaller city that a larger one cannot quite manage, and these pages try to hold on to it.
Rain is no reason to stay in. Stone looks its best when it is wet, and a good coat turns a grey day into one of the better ones for walking.
Northern light
Stone, weather and time
The pleasure of the north is its patience. Nothing rushes, the view earns itself with a short climb, and an afternoon can pass happily between a bookshop, a cup of tea and a slow loop back through the old streets.
The north keeps its own quiet time. Nicole Junkermann
